AUNTIE ANNE’S SET TO OPEN NEW STORES
AS IT CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY
Auntie Anne’s freshly made soft pretzels stores has announced plans to open three new stores in Croydon, Derby and Dudley over the next six months as it marks the first anniversary of the business. The company also plans to open another 15 stores by the end of next year with a number of new franchisees. Two of the new stores form part of the development of the relationship between Auntie Anne’s and Westfield, the world’s largest listed shopping centre company, and are set to open in MerryHill shopping centre, Dudley, a top ten centre with footfall of over 23 million; and the new Westfield Derby which is set to open in October 2007 and is the largest shopping centre development this year. Auntie Anne’s already operate a store in a Westfield development in Royal Victoria Place, Tunbridge Wells. These new openings mark the beginning of Auntie Anne’s developing relationship with Westfield whose expanding portfolio in the UK include the Westfield London development currently under construction. The third new Auntie Anne’s store due to open is in the Whitgift Shopping Centre in Croydon.
It is just over a year ago that the master franchise to operate Auntie Anne’s in the UK and Ireland was acquired by Managing Director, Robert Burton, former owner of Thrifty Car Rental. Since then the company has received a tremendous response to the product from customers at its existing eight store locations. Robert Burton said: “We are delighted by the way customers have taken to our pretzels. The product is quite unique and we find that once customers have tried the product for the first time they are converted. “Introducing a relatively new product to the UK consumer is not always easy but we have been delighted by the response. This has given us the confidence to grow the business nationwide through sub franchising and our three new stores in Birmingham, Croydon and Derby are the first of a major expansion programme. “In some respects, pretzels can be compared to where pizzas were twenty years ago and you only have to look at how successful that product is now to recognise the potential market for pretzels. It is an exciting time for Auntie Anne’s and we are really looking forward to developing Auntie Anne’s into a nationwide chain and a nationally recognised brand.”
