Astute Books is an affordable franchise giving you the flexibility to work from home and choose your hours to fit around your lifestyle. You can choose to run your franchise on a part time or full time basis in the comfort of your own home.

Good bookkeepers are hard to come by nowadays due to such high demand with many people often relying on word of mouth, having little understanding of training or ones background and experience. The demand pressure is not only geared by small and medium sized businesses, but also from accountancy practices that look to outsource their bookkeeping requirements. Demand pressures are expected to increase exponentially over the coming years with the proposed introduction of making Tax Digital. The implications this could lead to is quarterly reporting for all companies, thus, increasing demand for the already sought after ‘good bookkeepers and accountants’ quadrupling their workload.

Astute Books has been launched to take advantage of this opportunity in such a thriving market sector. Douglas McBain is the founder of Astute Books; a qualified account who has run a thriving accountancy practice in Glasgow for 20 years, as well as, starting a handful of successful business including a property letting franchise.

This opportunity will greatly appeal to people looking to start a business, which is totally flexible, offers a good work/life balance, and returns a good income. Astute will provide full training and support to get you kick-started in running your own franchise, with prior knowledge of accountancy not necessary. Candidates will undergo a two-week expert intensive training course at the purpose-built training centre in Glasgow to get your knowledge up to scratch.

Potential franchisees will be trained to get your business set up, shown where to find and manage clients through CRM systems such as Xero, receive marketing, website and PR support, and on-going six month support from an established accountancy practice. The only equipment requirements are a laptop, printer, scanner, and your own transport; you may need to travel to visit clients to collect documents or discuss their bookkeeping requirements.

“The business can be run on a full or part-time business so can fit in with family commitments. You are your own boss but with the support of a well-established and experienced accountancy firm you are not on your own. Ideally applicants should have good attention to detail, like working with numbers and have basic IT knowledge. An outgoing personality is essential, as you will have to deal with clients on a personal level and be able to source new business. Much of the work is deadline driven so you will need to be self-disciplined and self-motivation. The business can be run home so overheads are reasonably low”.

Astute Bookkeepers will be free to trade under the Astute brand or set up as an independent bookkeeper. The license fee to include full training and initial support is £6995 for an introductory period. On-going support is included for the first six months of the agreement and thereafter is chargeable at £195 per month. The licence period is five years and there are now fees for renewing.

McBain adds; “every business has to prepare accounts so the potential for bookkeepers is huge. There are no set territories, so they can deal with business in any location. Much of the work is repeat business, for example VAT preparation, so you should be able to establish a regular pipeline of work from clients. Potential earnings can range from £15,000 to £30,000 a year depending on your commitment and profile of your client base”.
